Why midlife doesn’t have to mean running on empty (and how to actually feel yourself again)

Midlife woman enjoying a quiet morning cup of tea, feeling calm and recharged.

Do you wake up feeling more tired than when you went to bed?

Your mind foggy, your patience thin, and that caffeine hit that used to do the trick barely scratches the surface anymore - so you reach for another, and another.

You’ve cleaned up your diet, added in more exercise, maybe even swapped that evening glass of wine for a herbal tea - but nothing really shifts. Your clothes feel a little tighter, your sleep is lighter, and you catch yourself thinking, “I should be more sorted by now.”

Sound familiar?

If you’re a woman over 40 quietly wondering why your body feels like it’s no longer playing by the rules, you’re absolutely not alone.

When “normal” doesn’t feel normal

So many women tell me the same thing: “My GP says my bloods are fine, I’m taking vitamin D, B12, creatine - so why do I still feel like this? - Is this just how things are now?”

The truth is, as women over 40, midlife brings a whole new layer of changes under the surface - hormonal fluctuations, a complete rewiring of the brain as the body prepares to put the ovaries into retirement, 3am wake ups and stress overloads added to the mix.

Factor in things like poor blood sugar balance, nutrient deficiencies, or gut issues - many of which aren’t picked up in standard blood tests - and you’ve got a perfect recipe for hormonal chaos and potentially burnout.

And your GP, kind as they may be, doesn’t have time to unpack it all in a 10‑minute appointment. Even with the best intentions, there’s rarely space to consider the whole picture. All they can offer is medicine - which doesn’t always help and nearly always comes with side effects.

Meanwhile, life doesn’t slow down.

You might be juggling work, supporting kids and ageing parents. Then there’s the endless WhatsApp messages to reply to. Homework to help with. Food to prep. Time and energy gets pulled elsewhere, and self‑care slides down the list - often right off the bottom.

“Once the kids are down, the evening’s gone,” one client told me. “Even rest feels like another task - I feel pressure to relax properly.”

Maybe you relate. You plan a workout but you’re too tired to move.

You tell yourself you’ll eat better, then find yourself gabbing a croissant on the way to work bevcasue you ran out of time.

You lose words mid‑sentence, stare blankly at the wardrobe and think, “I feel like I’ve lost who I used to be.”

So many of my clients tell me - “I don’t prioritise myself - something else always comes first.

Add to that the pressure so many feel from unrealistic expectations placed on them by society and media - no wonder so many are left feeling like they’re just hanging on.

Too often, this ends in a prescription - antidepressants, sleeping pills or HRT - but not much understanding of what’s actually going on underneath.

I’m not anti‑HRT or anti‑medicine. But when those are the first and only solutions, we miss a huge opportunity to support long‑term health and resilience.

So instead of turning to quick fixes or a cocktail of supplements, the better question is:

  • Are you getting what you really need from your food?

  • Is blood sugar balance throwing off your energy and mood?

  • What’s really sabotaging your sleep?

If you’re finishing the school run already exhausted, or you’re staring down the biscuit tin by 11 a.m., your body isn’t broken - and it’s not about willpower.

These are signals. And they are asking you to pay attention differently.

The missing piece: understanding what’s really going on

What helped me - and what I now help women do every day - wasn’t another plan to do more.

It was learning to pause, listen and get clarity.

A few years ago, my own health completely unravelled. I was exhausted, irritable and foggy‑headed. I did everything “right” - quit booze, tracked food, hired a PT - but my moods were chaotic, my skin was breaking out like I was 15 again, and I was permanently anxious. Eventually I burned out and was signed off work with “stress response” on my sick note.

I kept thinking, “I should be able to handle this.” But willpower wasn’t the issue.

When I finally looked properly - hormonally, nutritionally and emotionally - everything shifted. My energy stabilised, my sleep improved, my mood lifted, and I started to feel like myself again.

Not “superhuman.” Just human, with balance.

And that’s the piece most of us are missing.

Introducing the Midlife Health MOT

Nancy West, midlife health coach, smiling at her laptop while working from home, representing approachable one‑to‑one coaching support for women over 40.

That experience is exactly why I created the Midlife Health MOT - a 90-minute, evidence-based deep dive that helps women 40+ uncover what’s really driving their fatigue, foggy brain, or low mood.

Instead of more fads or frustration, we’ll take a calm, focused look at your hormones, energy, stress, sleep, and nutrition so you can finally make sense of what your body’s been trying to tell you.

No diets, no difficult detoxes. Just insight, strategy, and a realistic plan that fits your actual life.

Here’s how it works

In your 90-minute health MOT, we’ll:

  • Review your pre‑session journal to spot hidden patterns that drain your energy.

  • Explore how your nutrition, stress, exercise and sleep are interacting.

  • Identify small, high-impact changes that can actually make a difference fast.

  • Create a personalised plan that’s simple, sustainable, and doable

You’ll also receive:

  • 40+ Nutrition Guide full of realistic ideas for fuelling your body well (with no complicated, time draining recipes).

  • Messenger support for 2 weeks after our session so you can ask questions and keep momentum going.

What you’ll walk away with

By the end of your MOT, you’ll have:

✅ Clarity — on why you feel the way you do and what’s been holding you back.

✅ Confidence — that you finally have a plan grounded in science, not guesswork.

✅ Control — knowing exactly what to focus on and how to take charge of your health again.

No more 3am Googling. No more “maybe this supplement will help.”

Just relief, understanding, and a path forward that actually fits around your busy life.

That’s what this session is designed to do -

to be a turning point, not another quick fix.
